Update: Police divers recover man’s body from submerged car in Dawesville canal

An elderly man’s body has been recovered from a submerged car in a Dawesville canal on Saturday.

Police and St Johnn ambulance were called to the scene after reports a car had gone into the water off Surf View just after 7am.

Skeer Media understands the 78-year-old man was involved in a domestic incident with his ex-partner at a nearby property.

It’s further understood the man crashed a car into the woman’s house before it was found under water.

Officers at the scene told Skeer Media the area was a crime scene but refused to provide any further details.

CCTV vision from around the area shows the car roll into the water at 6:55am.

Tyre tracks could also be seen leading down to the waters’ edge.

Police cordoned off the vacant block on Surf View and stopped water access into the canal, bounded by South Port Boulevard, Nautical Pass and Channel View, from the Dawesville Cut.

Specialist police divers were retrieved the man’s body before a large crane lifted the vehicle out.

Police are not treating the death as suspicious.

A report will be prepared for the Coroner.
