Homes without power after car crashes into pole and catches fire

Hundreds of homes were left without electricity in the Port Kennedy area after a car crashed into a power pole and burst into flames on Saturday morning.

It’s understood the driver fell asleep at the wheel and crashed into the pole on Mandurah Road about 4:35am.

More than 600 properties were left without power in the Secret Harbour, Port Kennedy and Karnup area.

Firefighters were unable to extinguish the car fire straight away as downed electricity lines posed a safety risk.

Crews were forced to wait for Western Power to shut of the electricity before they could move in.

The driver is understood to have escaped the flames with non-life-threatening injuries was taken to hospital by St John Ambulance.

Police closed Mandurah Road northbound at Stakehill Road until the area was deemed safe.
