P-plate driver caught up in Baldivis police pursuit crash

Police have charged a man after a short chase came to a crashing end in Baldivis overnight, a p-plate driver was also caught up in the chaos.

Officers pulled over a silver Toyota Camry, in their unmarked SUV, after they detected the sedan allegedly speeding in the northbound lanes of the Kwinana Freeway in Karnup about 9:25pm.

As police began to approach the Camry, on foot, the sedan allegedly sped off in a reckless manner using the emergency lane to overtake other vehicles.

Several minutes later officers found the sedan with smoke coming from the engine after it took out a traffic light which collided with a p-plate driver at the Safety Bay Road overpass.

The Camry driver, a Halls Head man, was arrested and issued with an Immediate Disqualification Notice after police allege he failed a breath test.

St John Ambulance was called to check on both drivers, the p-plater walked away with minor injuries.

Police charged the 41-year-old with several offences including use of an unlicensed vehicle, excess of 0.08% blood alcohol concentration, and failure to stop.

He was refused bail and is due to appear in the Rockingham Magistrates Court today.
