A shark has knocked a swimmer at a Mandurah beach prompting authorities to issue an urgent warning to beachgoers in the Peel region.

Florida Beach, south of the Dawesville cut, has been closed after the swimmer was struck on the side about 1:35pm by a 3.5 metre great white.

“This has been confirmed by the Shark Operations Unit,” a Department of Primary Industry spokesman said in a statement.

People are urged to avoid the area as rangers and fisheries monitor the situation.

DPRID are working with City of Mandurah to coordinate the response locally.
