Woman killed in Perth backpackers fire

Investigations are underway after a fire ripped through a backpackers and killed a woman in East Perth overnight.

About 12.25am, emergency services, including police, the Department of Fire and Emergency Services and St John Ambulance were called to a fire at the Adelaide Terrace hostel.

Witnesses said two people were on the balcony as the multi-storey property went up in flames.

The two were rescued by firefighters.

Crews ran into the building to get everyone out and extinguish the blaze.

Five residents received smoke inhalation with two conveyed to Royal Perth Hospital by ambulance for treatment.

A woman was located and taken to hospital where she was declared deceased.

A man was placed into the back of a police car at the scene.

Police say he is assisting police with their inquiries.
